Warriors set state season bests at Anchorage Invite

ANCHORAGE — The defending state champion Wasilla Warriors posted a pair of state season bests during the final day of the Anchorage Invitational at Bartlett High School on Saturday.

Wasilla’s 1,600-meter relay team of Jenna Ford, Mariah Burroughs, Jessica Pahkala and Peggy Mathis bested the state’s previous top time in the girls event by more than six seconds. The Warriors relay team finished the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes and 13.33 seconds. Dimond held the previous mark with a time of 4.19.54, posted at the Big C Relays earlier this year.

Senior Morgan Dampier, the state record holder in the 800 meters, improved her state-best time in the 800, running at 2:10.98 in the Anchorage Invite. Dampier also came with a half-second of her personal best, the time of 2:10.42 she used to break the state record and earn her second state title in the event last year.

Mathis, Ford and Sariah Tuisaula also won individual events.

Mathis recorded a personal best time of 26.59 to win the 200. Ford won the 3,200 for the third time this season. Tuisaula used a throw of 34 feet, 1.5 inches to earn her fourth win in the shot put this year.

Ford, Alysha Devine, Mariah Burroughs and Riley Burroughs also combined to win the 3,200 relay.

Devon Teeling led the Wasilla boys with a win in the shot put. His throw of 47-0.75 was about five feet better than runner-up Alexander Reno of Bartlett.

Teeling was also second in the discus.
