PALMER — Fueled by wins in 15 different events, the Wasilla Warriors stormed to the sweep of the boys and girls classes during the Palmer Chaos track and field meet at Palmer High School on Thursday.
The Warriors collected lopsided victories in both the girls and boys teams standings of the first outdoor prep meet in the Mat-Su Valley this season.
A Wasilla athlete finished first in more than half of the girls’ events, and the boys recorded a half-dozen first-place finishes.
Freshman Morgan Dampier won both the 200- and 400-meter events, and later helped WHS score a win in the 1,600-meter relay. Senior Rachel Hoffman also won a pair of events, sweeping the 100 - and 300-meter hurdles.
Sophomore Alison Kelley (800) and freshman Kiera Rust (high jump) won events, and the Warriors’ 800-meter relay squad finished first to help the Warriors collect 88 team points.
Junior John Knowles led the Wasilla boys to the Chaos team title by sweeping the throwing events. Knowles finished ahead of teammate Chris Lafe in both categories.
Senior Baruch Chamberlin won the 3,200 and helped lead WHS to a win in the 3,200 relay. Stephen Pine (200) and Wasilla’s 800-relay squad also finished first.
The Colony girls and boys both finished second in the team standings.
Sydney Stewart (1,600), Shellina Irwin (discus) and Siobhan Johansen (triple jump) each finished first for the Colony girls.
Matt Jaronik won three events to lead the Colony boys. The defending 4A state champion in the 400-meter won the 400, and also finished first in the 300 hurdles and long jump.
Tanner Enloe won a pair of events for CHS, finishing first in the 800 and 1,600. Anthony Smith won the triple jump for WHS.
Erin LaMere won the discus to lead the Palmer girls to a third-place finish. John Scoresby led the Palmer boys with a win in the 100.
The Houston boys scored wins in three events. Dustin Dodds won the 110-meter hurdles, Aaron Reese won the high jump and the Hawks finished first in the 1,600 relay. The Valley squads were scheduled to hit the Seward Invitational this weekend, but that event has been canceled.
