Warriors sweep Seward Invite

SEWARD — When Wasilla High head coach Gary Howell asked his runners if there was anything else they’d like to do this season, the Warriors said they’d love to run in Seward again this season.

So Howell asked the Seward coaching staff if Wasilla could be added to the field. And the late additions ended up running away with the team titles. The Warriors swept the classes during the Frank Dieckgraeff Cross Country Running Invite on Friday in Seward.

Wasilla placed three runners in the top 5 and seven in the top 10 to win the girls team title by a landslide. Mariah Burroughs finished first to lead the defending state champions. Burroughs crossed the finish line at the 19-minute, 18-second mark, just two seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Peggy Mathis.

Wasilla’s Jessica Pahkala (fifth), Jenna Ford (sixth), Riley Burroughs (seventh), Mandi Ringgenberg (ninth) and Alysha Devine (10th) also finished in the top 10.

Seward finished second in the team standings with 85 points.

Noah Ripley used a fourth-place finish to lead the Warriors to a win in the boys’ team standings. Brandon Lee (fifth), Josh Pahkala (seventh) and Keith Thompson (11th) also finished in the top-11 to help Wasilla edge Seward by four points in the team standings.
