Warriors top Moose

WASILLA -- Andrew Tumbleson and Jeremiah Dargis each scored five points as the Wasilla Warriors skated past the Palmer Moose 17-3 in varsity hockey action at the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Ice Arena on Wednesday.

Tumbleson, a senior forward, notched a hat trick and added two assists for the 2-1 Warriors. Tumbleson scored twice in the third period and completed the hat trick with a goal just more than 90 seconds into the third period.

Dargis opened the scoring for Wasilla with a goal eight minutes into the first period, a score assisted by Tumbleson, and recorded a helper in each of the three periods.

James Elkins, Eric Zehnder and Adam Friese each scored two goals for Wasilla.

Skating in just their third official game of the season, the Warriors -- who return 11 upperclassman from a 2003-04 state tournament qualifying team -- are trying to work the kinks out before heading into a tough stretch of a schedule that includes Chugiak, Colony and South Anchorage.

"We're trying to see where everybody's at," Tumbleson said.

Dylan Schindele, Tyson Alger and Cody Gable each scored for Palmer.

Schindele, a freshman forward, took a pass from Livio Arpagous and scored with just more than two minutes left in the first period to cut the Wasilla advantage to 2-1.

Late in the second period, Alger scored the second goal of the night for Palmer. The forward skated down the ice to retrieve a Hunter Richards pass, beat the lone Wasilla defenseman and poked the shot into the net.

Gable scored midway the third period for the Moose.

Rhone Schenker faced 45 shots in net for Palmer. Wasilla goaltender Jesse Hugli registered eight saves in the win.

Wasilla hosts Chugiak in a nonconference contest Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Menard Rink. Palmer hosts Kenny Lake, Nov. 23 at 3:15 p.m. at the Menard Arena.
