Warriors win girls showdown

ANCHORAGE — In arguably the most heavily anticipated girls basketball matchup of the 2012-13 regular season, the two-time defending state champion needed a big second half to get past host Dimond 49-43 and win the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout at Dimond High School Saturday night.

Wasilla came out on top of the 16-team, four-day tournament thanks to 34 second-half points, and a 20-point effort from senior Alexis Imoe.

Wasilla led just 6-4 after the first period, and Dimond used a 15-point second period to take a 19-15 halftime lead.

But with a senior-laden arsenal that includes the likes of Imoe and Kyla Dinkel, the Warriors were able to post the second-half rally.

Dinkel added 17 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Imoe and fellow senior Alysha Devine were named co-MVPs of the event. Dinkel and senior Jenna Ford represented WHS on the all-tourney team.

Wasilla moved into the final game of the championship bracket by doubling up West Valley 62-31 in the semifinals. Wasilla didn’t allow a first-quarter point to West Valley, led 21-0 after the first eight minutes and never looked back.

Dinkel scored 19 points in the victory, and Imoe added 11.

After suffering a first-round loss to Kodiak in the championship bracket, Colony rebounded to grab consecutive wins and finish fourth.

The Knights finished the tourney with a 44-32 win over Lathrop. Mary Klapperich recorded a double-double, 17 points and 11 rebounds, to lead the Knights. Jennifer Solano added 10 points and seven boards.

Led by Klapperich’s 21 points Friday, the Knights beat Ketchikan 58-33. Audrey Michaelson added eight for the Knights.

The Palmer Moose capped their four days of the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout with a 65-54 win over Chugiak Saturday. Palmer used a 22-7 fourth-quarter run to get by the Mustangs, and finish third in the event’s maroon bracket.

Seniors Taylor Blake and Caitlin Scott combined for 47 points in the win. Blake poured in a game-high 27. Scott, who was 3 of 5 from behind the arc, added 20.

In addition to her eight field goals, Blake was also 11 for 16 from the free-throw line. Palmer finished 26 for 38 from the line.

Kalie DePriest narrowly missed a double-double, collecting 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Moose were pushed into the third-place game with a 55-48 loss to West Anchorage in the maroon bracket semifinals. Blake scored a game-high 16 points. Leya DePriest finished with 10 points and a game-best 16 rebounds for the Moose.
