Warriors win Kodiak baseball tourney

WASILLA — The Wasilla Warriors used a late push in the final inning to finish as the top team in the Rex Edward Matautia Invitational baseball tournament in Kodiak April 16.

Wasilla scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally to a 9-8 win over Chugiak in the title game.

Nolan Monaghan led Wasilla with three hits in the win. Ben Werner drove in a pair of runs for the Warriors.

Wasilla and Chugiak were joined by Dimond and host Kodiak in the second-annual four-team tournament. Both the Warriors and the Mustangs finished 2-1 in round-robin play.

Wasilla opened round-robin play, and its 2016 season, with a 3-0 victory over the Mustangs on the first day of the tournament. Three Wasilla pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter. Ben Werner and Ryan Perkins drove in runs for Wasilla.

Wasilla followed with a 5-1 loss to Dimond. Warriors pitcher Koby Burns fanned eight in the loss.

Wasilla bounced back with a 12-0 victory over Southcentral Conference rival Kodiak. Monaghan tossed a one-hitter in the win, and struck out 10 during the five-inning complete game. Werner, Monaghan and Jeffrey Forster had two hits each. Werner and Monaghan drove in three runs each.

The Kodiak win also counted as a Southcentral Conference game.

The Warriors return to the field to face Houston April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Houston High School.

Knights fall

ANCHORAGE — The Colony Knights suffered a loss in their 2016 season opener.

South Anchorage scored a 10-0 win over Colony April 15 in Anchorage.

The Knights return to Anchorage April 25 to face Eagle River at 6:30 p.m. at the Kosinski Baseball Fields in Anchorage.
