WASILLA — Sophomore Cooper Hanson netted a hat trick in the first period to lead the Wasilla Warriors to an 11-1 win over the Colony junior varsity during the final day of the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Ice Arena on Saturday.
Hanson’s work came during a seven-goal first period for the Warriors.
Teegan Harrington and Rell Sturdevant each scored to give Wasilla the 2-0 lead, but Colony’s Derek Boyovich scored midway through the period to cut that lead in half.
After the Boyovich score, Hanson scored three of his team’s next five goals, including two in less than a minute.
Harrington scored his second goal of the period at the 3:42 mark of the first.
Will Harren, Blake Jessen, Coultin Westcott, Brandon Trush and Troy Verplanke also scored for the Warriors.
Waslla had a tough road through the tournament. The Warriors were edged by Lathrop 2-1 during the first round on Thursday, and suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to rival Colony on Friday.
