The Barrow Whalers made history Friday night, hosting a prep football game under the lights for the first time. But the Wasilla Warriors earned a piece of that history.
Wasilla used a 31-14 win over the Whalers to become the first team to win a football game under the lights on a field that parallels the Arctic Ocean.
Diesel fueled generators powered light banks on opposite corners of the field for the game that had an 8 p.m. kickoff.
Wasilla used a ground game to earn the nonconference win, and combat 20 mph winds. Kade Russell rushed for a game-high 141 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Ryan Mikkelsen added 114 yards and a score. Brandon Wadleigh had 68 yards rushing and a touchtown.
Russell’s third touchdown of the game gave Wasilla a 31-0 lead in the third quarter. Barrow scored both of its touchdowns in the fourth.
Wasilla improved to 1-2 with the win. The Division II Warriors host Division I South Anchorage Sept. 6 at Wasilla High.
The Redington Huskies earned a 50-14 win over Kodiak Friday at Redington.
Quarterback Christian Ingraham threw for 112 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. The Huskies ran the ball 39 times for 333 yards and five touchdowns.
Finn Swalling ran for a touchdown and caught another. Ingraham also connected with Jake Murdock on a touchdown pass. Ingraham also ran for two scores. Justus Spaulding and Michael Marquez-Hopson added rushing touchdowns.
Redington improved to 2-1 with the win.
In other action, Division II North Pole beat Division III Houston 36-6 in North Pole.
