PALMER — A Wasilla boy was among five recipients ages 11 to 18 to receive 2011 Summer of Heroes scholarships from Alaska Communications.

The five — Sam Allred, 11, Wasilla; Krista Stapleford, 12, Anchorage; Fred Falealili, 17, Anchorage; Jayden Tumbaga, 17, Kenai and Mersades Basford, 18, Anchorage — received $1,500 scholarships, were guests at a banquet in their honor Aug. 27 and a day at the Alaska State Fair Aug. 28. The program is a partnership between Alaska Communications and Boys and Girls Clubs of Alaska to support youth development programs throughout the state and recognize young Alaskans making a difference in their local communities.
