WASILLA — A freshman used a big debut to help his new team accomplish something it has not done since 2011.

Knock off an out-of-state squad in its holiday basketball tournament.

Freshman Daniel Headdings scored a game-high 17 points to lead Wasilla to a 62-43 victory over the Ambridge Bridgers during the opening day of the seventh annual Doc Larson’s Roundball Classic Thursday at Wasilla High School. Headdings hit 7 of his 13 attempts from the field and knocked down a pair of three-pointers to help Wasilla beat an out-of-state team in the tourney for the first time since knocking off the Golden, Colorado, Eagles in 2011.

Kobe Brown, Reilly Devine and Isaac Houck added 10 points each for the Warriors, who move forward to play Barrow Friday at 8:20 p.m. in the semifinals at Wasilla High School.

The Warriors used a 16-6 second-quarter run to take a 27-19 halftime lead. Wasilla shot 51 percent in the game, and held the Bridgers, a squad from Ambridge, Pennsylvania, to 21 percent shooting.

The win also completed a sweep for the Wasilla basketball teams on the first day of the tournament. Earlier in the day, the Wasilla girls beat Barrow 58-41.
