WASILLA — Following the lead of their fast freshman, the Wasilla boys’ cross-country running squad chased down its second team title of the regular season.
Freshman Hunter Hayes used his third-place finish to help Wasilla win the Frank Diekgraeff Invitational Friday in Seward. The Warriors, who also won the Colony Invitational at the beginning of the season, finished with 65 team points in the team standings, beating runner-up Soldotna by a dozen.
Hayes finished with a time of 17 minutes, 26 seconds in the 5-kilometer race. Isaak Bell also grabbed a top-10 finish placing eighth with a time of 18:03.
Gavin Block scored a top-5 finish for the Colony boys, placing fifth with a time of 17:54.
Colony finished third in the girls’ team standings. A trio of Knights finished in the top 7. Jill Bowker used a time of 20:18 to lead all Valley runners, and place fourth. Coleen Geraghy (20:50) and Elisabeth Bowker (20:55) followed with fourth- and fifth-place finishes.
Alison VanPelt led Houston with a time of 20:58, and an eighth-place finish. Jens Knutson was 15th to lead the Houston boys.
