Wasilla boys win Palmer Relays

PALMER — The Wasilla Warriors edged host Palmer to win the boys’ team title during the Palmer Relays on Saturday.

Junior John Knowles and senior Chris Lafe each posted wins in the throwing events to help WHS finish with 55 total points, three more than the second-place Moose.

Knowles tossed the discus 152 feet and 11 inches during the final round to win the event. His mark also gave him the top distance in the state this year.

Lafe used a throw of 46-9.75 to win the shot put.

Knowles and Lafe also helped WHS finish second in the 400-meter weight relay, an annual event at the Palmer meet which puts throwers on the track.

Palmer’s team of Kyle Scheibe, J.D. Mitchell, Jesse Marden and David Zoerb gave the Moose a win in the weight relay.

Junior Wylie Mangelsdorf finished second in the 5,000-meter.

Senior Katie Troxel won the shot put to lead Colony to a second-place finish in the girls’ standings.

Cecilia Hull, Rashayne Zimmer, Miranda Psenak and Monica Nuenberg posted a win in the girls’ 400-meter weight relay.

Houston, Palmer to co-host meet

Houston and Palmer will co-host the 2009 Mat-Su Borough Championships, which start today at Houston High School.

Action is slated to begin at 3 p.m. when Houston hosts the triple jump, high jump and shot put. The girls’ and boys’ 3,200-meter is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the HHS track.

On Wednesday, the long jump and discus will begin at 3 p.m. at Palmer High.

More than 20 running events will also start at 3 p.m.
