WASILLA — The Wasilla City Council approved several motions during the regularly scheduled meeting Monday, February 14.

The council approved a motion to hold a public hearing Feb. 28 amending the fiscal year 2022 budget by appropriating $18,610 from the Miscellaneous Capital Projects Fund to acquire optical scan ballot tabulators and related equipment during city elections.

The council also approved a motion to award a $58,975 contract to Wheaton Water Wells, Inc. for the Spruce Avenue well upgrade project.

A resolution authorizing a lease extension from 10 years To 30 years to Michael Sandstrom for a lot at the Wasilla Municipal Airport passed unanimously.

The council also voted unanimously to approve a resolution requesting participation in Building A Better America federal grant programs.

“We have to participate with everybody across the USA,” Wasilla Mayor Glenda Ledford said. “The smaller rural communities, they’ll have the same opportunity as the larger cities.”

During the public comment portion, a Wasilla High School student representative shared several updates including taking second in the state hockey tournament and the marching band’s successful fundraising efforts for their upcoming trip to Washington DC for the Lincoln Memorial centennial celebration.

Mayor Ledford commended the school for achieving so many recent milestones.

“I’m certainly excited about the band going to DC. What a great thing. The Warriors are on the warpath on every little thing that they’re doing,” Ledford said.

Several Wasilla City Council members are traveling down to Juneau with Mayor Ledford for the Alaska Municipal League winter legislative conference Feb. 16 through Feb. 18.

The council is currently recruiting applicants to fill a vacant seat. The deadline for applications is Friday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m.
