WASILL A— The Wasilla City Council recognized Education and Sharing Day during the most recent regularly scheduled meeting Monday, March 14.

Education and Sharing Day is recognized April 12. It was established by the United States Congress to emphasize charitable acts through shared education in honor of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, commonly referred to as The Rebbe, who’s considered one of the most influential Jewish leaders of the 20th century and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

“In the great city of Wasilla, we strive for the betterment of all of our cit through an increased focus on education and sharing,” Wasilla Mayor Glenda Ledford read from the proclamation. “One of the leading global advocates for the advancement of education, The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson stressed the importance of moral and ethical education as the bedrock of humanity and the hallmark of a healthy society and strongly urged that education be reinforced by the inclination of strong moral values.”

Mat-Su Jewish Center director Rabbi Mendy Greenberg gave a short presentation to the council to discuss the history and importance of Education and Sharing Day.

“Education and sharing are synonymous since becoming a giver or sharer demands education and it’s up to us to set a proper example for our children,” Greenberg said.

Greenberg said this year marks Schneerson’s 120th birthday. He handed each council member a small box and explained their purpose. The boxes coincide with Acts of Random Kindness, a global initiative that encourages charitable acts such as setting aside funds inside these charity boxes to create the habit of giving on a regular basis.

“The hand becomes giving hand and one becomes a giver as a result,” Greenberg said. “There is perhaps no greater way of observing Education and Sharing Day than making giving a habit in our lives, thereby transforming acts of random kindness into acts of routine kindness.”

After the presentation, Ledford presented Greenberg with the proclamation recognizing Education and Sharing Day.
