WASILLA — The Wasilla City Council recently recognized Flag Day during the regularly scheduled meeting Monday, June 13.

During the meeting, Wasilla Mayor Glenda Ledford read a proclamation recognizing June 14 as Flag Day.

“The American flag symbolizes the strength, honor, values, and the patriotic ideas and spiritual qualities of the citizens of our nation,” Ledford said.

The iconic red, white and blue design commonly referred to as the “Stars and Stripes” was adopted by the Continental Congress as the official American flag on June 14, 1777 during the Revolutionary War.

President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing the national holiday in 1916.

Ledford said the City of Wasilla celebrates Flag Day each year, encouraging the public to ponder the meaning of the Stars and Stripes the whole week of Flag Day.

“The flag reminds us of our fidelity to our country, allowing every citizen to draw inspiration from the symbol of our past, our present, and our ideals of the future, waiting as a shining beacon of freedom to the rest of the world,” Ledford said. “I encourage all citizens to observe, honor, reflect on the foundations of our nation’s freedom.”
