WASILLA — The city got three new members on its council this week when Ron Cox, Leone Harris and Nancy Hall were sworn in.
The three won their seats during the Oct. 7 municipal election.
This week marks a period of change as Wasilla residents await another big change in their city with the election of a new mayor.
Standing in front of City Clerk Kristie Smithers, Harris, Hall and Cox took an official oath and swore to uphold the principles of the council.
Just before the council meeting began, outgoing council members signed commemorative plaques and talked about their time on the council. Steve Menard, who also ran for mayor this year, said he has enjoyed his council experience.
“I’m proud of my record,” he said. “I’m proud of what I accomplished.”
Stephanie Massie, who admitted to getting a little misty eyed over her departure, said she’ll cherish the experience of being on the council.
“It’s something I never thought I would have done,” she said.
For Marty Metiva, who is in the run-off election for mayor against Verne Rupright, said the experience has been enjoyable.
“No regrets,” Metiva said. “I had a good time.”
For their part, the three taking over on council were all smiles Monday. Cox said he’s looking forward to getting down to business with the council. He couldn’t yet determine if the new council members will be good for the city.
“It’s too early to tell,” he said.
Harris said she’s ready to start making changes that benefit the city. Her new council counterpart, Hall, echoed the sentiment, saying she’s looking forward to getting involved.
The swearing in ceremony only lasted a few minutes, then it was back to business as usual as outgoing Mayor Dianne M. Keller began the meeting with a pound of the gavel.
