Wasilla City Clerk Jamie Newman received the Clerk of the Year Award at the annual Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks (AAMC) conference Nov. 14 in Anchorage.
According to a press release, the award was established in 2000 to recognize Alaska municipal clerks who have made significant contributions toward furthering the municipal clerk profession, improving municipal government, continuing professional development through education, demonstrating leadership, and making significant contributions to the quality of life in their community.
Newman is a former president of the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks, has mentored clerks throughout Alaska, has served on numerous AAMC committees, and has presented sessions at the annual AAMC conferences about the role of the clerk, election process, and parliamentary procedure. She earned her Certified Municipal Clerk designation in 2001 and her Master Municipal Clerk designation in 2012.
Newman was nominated for the award by her mayor, city council and staff for her 20-year service in municipal government. In his nomination letter, Wasilla Mayor Bert Cottle noted that Jamie’s “honesty, dedication, knowledge about how government works, ethics, and winning personality make the City of Wasilla shine every day.”
