ANCHORAGE — It didn’t take long for Ceil Dunleavy to take a big leap in Alaska track and field.
The Wasilla freshman won an individual state title in the 4A girls high jump, with a mark of 5 feet, 2 inches, during the first day of the ASAA/First National Bank State Track and Field Championships Friday at Dimond High School in Anchorage.
Dunleavy, who matched a career high with the mark, was the lone jumper to top the 5-foot mark. Colony’s Jacklyn Jaronik was one of four athletes to hit a mark of 4-10, and settled for fourth place in the event.
Friday marked the third time this season that Dunleavy eclipsed the 5-foot mark. She hit 5-1 a the Palmer Invitational in early May, and 5-2 last week at the Region III Championships. She won the high jump in seven of the nine meets she competed in this season.
Dunleavy is the first girl in school history to win the high jump and the first Wasilla athlete to win the high jump since Lee Knowles captured the boys title in 1987 with a mark of 6-4. The last Valley girl to win the 4A high jump was Colony’s Shelby Beairsto in 2004 with a mark of 5-2.
Dunleavy was one of a handful of Valley athletes to place on the first day of the two-day meet. Colony sophomore Chase Stephens was the runner-up in the triple jump, finishing with a leap of 35 feet, 8.75 inches. Thunder Mountain’s Naomi Welling was first, hitting 37 feet. Colony’s Cathelyne Powers was eighth in the 3,200.
Dunleavy’s fellow Wasilla freshman Alex Mathis also placed sixth in the 3,200.
Houston senior Matt Barron led Valley boys with a runner-up finish in the 3A triple jump. Barron hit a mark of 40 feet, 1 inch, just short of Nate Simmers of Anchorage Christian School, who finished first with a jump of 41 feet.
Lucas Jones led Colony with a sixth-place finish in the 4A boys triple jump. Colony’s Brandon Nicholson was seventh in the high jump.
