The Wasilla Warriors will play for a 4A girls basketball state title.
Wasilla moved forward with a 44-23 win over West Anchorage during the semifinal round of the ASAA/First National Bank 4A Girls State Basketball Championships Friday at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.
With the win, Wasilla will play in a state title game for the 14th time in school history, and the 11th time during Jeannie Hebert-Truax’s career as the Warriors head coach. Second-seed Wasilla faces top-seeded Anchorage Christian School Saturday at 5:30 p.m. It will be the fourth meeting of the now conference rivals. The Lions are undefeated this season and 3-0 against Wasilla. ACS joined the Northern Lights Conference during the offseason after it was bumped up by ASAA from the 3A to 4A level.
ACS beat Ketchikan 67-37 in the other semifinal.
Bella Hays led Wasilla with 16 points in the win. Layla Hays pulled down 16 rebounds. The Warriors outrebounded the Eagles 42-20.
Wasilla also outscored West 13-0 in the second.
Colony suffered another heartbreaking loss in the 4A boys semifinals. Undefeated East Anchorage, the top seed, slipped by the fifth-seeded Knights 45-43.
Colony held a 17-15 lead at halftime, and East outscored the Knights 30-26 during the final two quarters. Jayce Underwood led Colony with a dozen points and Kash Luce added 11. Harvey Pullen finished with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Colony will play Dimond Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the third-place game.
In other action, the Colony girls beat Lathrop 51-40 in the 4A consolation semifinals. Hallie Clark led Colony with 17 points. Kaylee Wilkes added 16.
Fourth-seeded Colony will play seventh-seeded Bartlett in the fourth-place game Saturday at 9 a.m.
The Palmer boys also won in the 4A consolation semifinals, staying alive with a 48-45 win over NLC rival Kodiak. Elzavier Bradley scored a game-high 24 points for the Moose.
Palmer will play West Valley Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the fourth-place game.
