WASILLA — A group of underclassmen have helped the Wasilla Warriors post another undefeated season in Northern Lights Conference play.

Tuesday, freshman Taylor Anderson scored 10 fourth-quarter points to help the Warriors earn a victory at Colony High. Friday, another freshman, Azlynn Brandenburg scored 15 in a 61-52 win over Kodiak. Saturday, Brandenburg posted a team-high 13 in a 75-38 win over the Bears.

“They’re definitely a huge asset to our team this year,” Wasilla senior Cassidy Edwards said of the younger players. “I expected them to come in and be role players, not game-makers, and they’re definitely game-makers.”

Anderson scored eight points in each win over Kodiak.

“They’ve got a lot of talent,” Wasilla head coach Jeannie Hebert-Truax said of her youngest players. “They have the potential and the athletic ability and talent to step up and do stuff like that.”

Saturday, the Warriors cruised to a lopsided win over the Bears, beating Kodiak 75-38 to cap a 10-0 season in the NLC. The Warriors started the game on a 20-6 run, allowed only two points in the second quarter and led 37-8 at halftime.

Edwards posted 12 points and seven rebounds. Junior Leya DePriest added 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Friday, Wasilla needed a third-quarter run to pull awat from the Bears, who dropped to 5-5 in NLC play.

Wasilla led by five at halftime Friday, but Kodiak scored nine points early in the third to tie the game at 27.

Midway through the third, Brandenburg moved the ball inside to set up an Edwards layup that gave Wasilla the 29-27 lead.

Edwards took over in the third quarter, scoring 10 straight points for her team.

“Cassidy did a great job for us stepping up,” Hebert-Truax said.

As well as the younger athletes are playing right now, Hebert-Truax said it’s still key for the veterans to have those types of moments.

“They’ve been there. The kids look up to them,” Hebert-Truax said. “To have them do something like that, it’s good for other people to see.”

Junior Leya DePriest also dominated inside. DePriest finished with 13 points and a game-high 21 rebounds.

With the 10-0 mark, Wasilla earns the top seed in the NLC Championships, which start Thursday in Kenai. Wasilla has a first-round bye, and will face the winner of fourth and fifth seeds. The top three seeds are set, but the bottom three seeds have yet to be decided. Colony is the No. 2 seed, and Kodiak is seeded third.
