Wasilla girls, Colony boys win borough track titles

The Wasilla girls and the Colony boys scored team titles at the Mat-Su Borough Track and Field Championships at Palmer High School this week.

The Warriors - led by double-winner Hillarie Putnam - earned 144 total points, nearly 40 more than second-place Colony.

Putnam, a senior, scored wins in both the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump.

Her time of 17.56 seconds in the hurdles was slightly better than her teammate Rachel Hoffman, who finished second at 18.53.

Putnam cleared 33 feet in the triple jump.

Putnam was one of four Warriors to win individual events for the WHS girls team.

Kristy Atwood was the top sprinter, winning the 100 meter, and a pair of Warriors won in the middle distance events.

Samantha Lewis won the 800, while Katie Bialka won the 1,600.

The Warriors' 3200 relay team of Lewis, Kahla Oosting, Jessica Gross and Keri Clump also won.

Senior Ardrienna Everett led second-place Colony with a win in the 300 hurdles, and a second-place finish in the triple jump.

Third-place Palmer scored the bulk of its points in the relay events. Palmer's 400, 800 and 1600 relay teams all finished first. Lindsey Orvash won the 200 for Palmer.

Colony finished with 129 points in the boys standings.

Michael Zagars won a pair of events to lead the Colony boys to the team title.

Zagars won the 300 hurdles and the triple jump.

Zagars' brother Antone finished first in the 1,600.

Colony's 800 relay team also finished first.

Second-place Palmer won seven different events, including three wins in the relay events.

Senior Kevin Smith also won two events - the 400 and 800 - for the Moose.
