Wasilla girls edge Mountain City in the final seconds

A pair of all-state seniors hit free throws during the final seconds to help top-ranked Wasilla rally to beat third-ranked Mountain City Christian 50-48 Tuesday night at Wasilla High School.

Mylee Anderson hit a free-throw with 24.1 seconds left to break a 48-48 tie. Layla Hays added another free throw with 3.9 seconds remaining. It was part of an 11-5 Wasilla run, after MCC took a 43-37 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Wasilla led only once in the final quarter before the Anderson free throw. Savannah Kroon drove to the basket with two minutes left to give the Warriors the 46-45 advantage. Hays tied the game with a layup with 58 seconds left.

Hays scored a game-high 20 points in the victory. The senior scored nine of Wasilla’s 14 first-quarter points. Mielee Merchant hit a trio of threes in the first half, and added nine points.

In boys action, Wasilla beat MCC 62-40.
