The Wasilla Warriors needed a late push to overcome a slow start during a battle that featured a pair of Alaska’s top 4A girls basketball squads.
Wasilla closed the game on an 11-5 run to secure a 48-37 victory over Mountain City Christian Tuesday night in Anchorage.
Mountain City held Wasilla, the defending state champions, to only six points in the first quarter. The Warriors jumped back into the game with 15 points in the second, and outscored the Lions 27-15 during the final two quarters. Layla Hays scored six of her 12 points in the second quarter. Mylee Anderson led Wasilla with 13. Mielee Merchant chipped in 10.
The Wasilla boys followed with a 62-39 win over Mountain City.
