Wasilla girls pace Valley swimmers at regional meet

KODIAK — Karina Barria paced a solid regional swimming performance by the Wasilla girls this weekend, qualifying for the state swim meet in two events.

Barria was one of three Valley swimmers to earn an automatic bid into the state meet by winning the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly events. She’ll be joined at the state competition by teammate Mariah Schachle, who scored an impressive 370.60 to win the girls’ 1-meter diving event. Colony standout Connor Eshleman also won his 1-meter diving competition with a composite score of 359.55.

By winning their events, Barria and Schachle helped the Warrior girls accumulate 41 team points, enough for third place overall and by far the best team result of Valley schools at the regional in Kodiak. Homer was just ahead of Wasilla with 43 points, while powerhouse Kodiak ran away with the team title with 117 points.

Palmer (16) and Colony (1) girls also found the scoreboard.

For the boys, Eshleman helped the Knights finish sixth overall with 24 points, followed by Palmer (15) in seventh place and Wasilla (4) in eighth.

To qualify for the state meet, swimmers have to either win their events at regionals or post one of the top 12 times in all regions combined, excluding the winners. It wasn’t immediately know as of press time if any other Valley swimmers qualified for state based on their regional performances.
