WASILLA — The Wasilla Warriors bounced back from a rare loss with a lopsided nonconference girls basketball win over Lathrop Saturday afternoon at Wasilla High.
A day after falling to West Valley in overtime, the Warriors scored a 67-32 victory over Lathrop. Junior Cheyenne Green sparked the Warriors with a monster effort. Green finished with 19 points and 19 rebounds in the game. Eleven of those rebounds came on the offensive glass. Olivia Davies added 14 points and seven steals. Maclaren Obremski hit a trio of three-pointers and chipped in 11 points. Azlynn Brandenburg finished with nine points and five steals for the Warriors, who forced 31 Lathrop turnovers.
Tyra Do notched a double-double for the Malemutes, with 13 points and 18 rebounds. Salena Lowe also had 14 rebounds for Lathrop.
Friday, West Valley stunned two-time defending state champion Wasilla 64-58 in overtime at Wasilla High School.
The Wolfpack outscored Wasilla 15-9 during the tiebreaker. Wasilla, which fell behind early, forced overtime with a 17-10 fourth-quarter run.
Davies notched a double-double with 22 points and 11 steals in the loss. Brandenburg added a dozen for the Warriors. Wasilla shot 17 of 67 in the game. The Wolfpack also outrebounded Wasilla 49-36. West Valley’s Ellen Silva finished with a double-double, 13 points and 17 rebounds. Jozey Martellaro was just shy of another double-double, with nine points and 13 boards.
The Wasilla boys also scored a win on Saturday, beating Lathrop 37-19. After a tight first quarter, Wasilla led 6-2, the Warriors created some space with a 13-6 second-quarter run. The Wasilla defense held Lathrop to single digits in scoring in each of the four quarters.
Jordan Knight scored a game-high nine points for the Warriors. Levi Houck added eight, and Daniel Headdings and Riley Devine finished with six points each.
Redington splits at Seward
The Redington Huskies scored their second Southcentral Conference victory in school history.
Abbie Fuller used 14 points to help Redington earn a 36-23 win over the Seward Seahawks Friday night in Seward. Courtney Crockett added a dozen for the Huskies, who held Seward to single digits in scoring in each of the four quarters. Redington led 9-6 after the first quarter, and extended its lead with an 11-6 second-quarter run.
Riley Von Borstel led Seward with 13.
In boys’ action, Seward held on to grab a 53-49 win over the Huskies. Brody Brooks led Redington with a game-high 20 points. Bristin Conaway added nine, and Brian Amirault chipped in eight. Redington led 16-12 after the first, but Seward tied the game at 26 prior to the half.
Thursday, Homer picked up a 63-39 win over the Redington boys in Homer. Conaway scored a team-best 14 for the Huskies.
