Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

NIKISKI — The feat seemed impossible to repeat, but it actually took only one year to match.
A year after former Wasilla running star Morgan Dampier swept four individual running events in the region championships, Dampier’s former teammate did exactly the same thing. Wasilla sophomore Peggy Mathis equaled Dampier’s accomplishments of 2012, winning the 100-, 200-, 400- and 800-meter races during the Region III Championships at Nikiski High School on Saturday.
Mathis used her four wins to help Wasilla win its fourth straight girls Region III-4A running title. The Warriors finished with 115 total points in the team standings. Colony was second at 107.5.
Saturday night, Wasilla coach Leslie Varys said by cellphone during the trip back to the Valley that she wasn’t surprised to see Wasilla’s newest track standout notch the rare feat of winning four individual events.
“What Morgan did was spectacular, but you come back and look at those results, and Peggy was there,” Varys said of Mathis, who finished as the region runner-up to Dampier in the 200 and 400 last year. “(Peggy is) now benefiting from some of those seniors graduating and getting out of the way.”
As the Warriors headed into the 2013 meet, Varys said she saw the potential for Mathis to grab four wins.
“I thought it was possible, however, she always surprises me with how strong she performs in each of them,” Varys said. “She’s getting more comfortable with that lineup. Every time we run, she recovers quicker, and gets faster.”
What stands out the most, Varys said, is Mathis is only a sophomore.
“So young and still able to handle that lineup, that’s a testament to how naturally talented an athlete she is,” Varys said.
En route to her four wins, Mathis also set a state season-best in the 400, winning the race in 57.59 seconds. She is only the second runner this season to break the minute-mark in the girls’ 400. Mathis won the 100 with a time of 13.09, the 200 with a mark of 26.57 and the 800 with a time of 2:19.35.
Alysha Devine also scored an individual title for the Warriors. The senior won the region title in the 300 hurdles for the second consecutive year. Devine also helped the Warriors win the 1,600-meter relay (joining Danika Ingersoll, Mariah Burroughs and Riley Burroughs), and she was second to Mathis in the 200.
After finishing Day 1 with only four points, Wasilla spent its day Saturday playing catch-up.
“(Colony) was pretty far ahead of us most of the day,” Varys said.
Soldotna ruled the first day, and finished with 39 points. Colony sat in third with 26.5 and Wasilla was in dead last when the meet resumed Saturday morning.
Obviously, Mathis was a big key to Wasilla’s second day, but Varys pointed out at least two other events that were critical to the win.
The Warriors swept the top 3 spots in the 200, with Mathis, Devine and Ingersoll taking those spots. Ingersoll, just a freshman, was also third in the 100, and helped the Warriors win the 1,600-meter relay.
Varys said the move of Devine from the triple jump to the 200 was also key.
“That proved to be a wise choice,” Varys said. “We were able to go 1-2-3 in the 200, which was huge.”
Colony had its own young athlete who amassed the points. Freshman Chase Stephens won three events and finished second in another. Stephens swept the jumps winning the long jump (15 feet, 8 inches) by about three inches, and the triple jump (34-0.25) by nearly two feet.
Stephens was also the runner up to Mathis in the 100.
Senior Audrey Michaelson also stood out for the Knights, but spent her weekend as sort of a side note in a pair of historic storylines.
Friday, Kenai sophomore Allie Ostrander shattered a 27-year-old state record in the 3,200, running a stunning 10:25.74 in the event. Michealson finished second in the 3,200. Saturday, Ostrander became just the third girl in state history to crack the 5-minute mark in the 1,600, posting a 4:58.21. Michaelson finished in just over five minutes, placing second with a time of 5:05.
Michaelson rounded out her four second-place finishes with runner-up finishes to Mathis in the 400 and 800 Saturday.
Palmer senior Taylor Blake led the Moose with a region title in the shot put. Blake used a throw of 35-7.5 to win her first region throwing crown. Blake continues to lead the state in the event.
In boys’ action, Houston senior Charlie Buzby also posted multiple wins. Buzby finished first in both the 100 and 200 to help the Hawks earn a fifth-place finish in the boys’ team standings of the Region III-3A Championships.
Buzby also combined with Dustin Griffith, Ben Bayne and Matt Barron as Houston won the 400-meter relay. Bayne finished second in both boys’ hurdles events.
In the boys’ 4A championships, Valley athletes swept the throwing and hurdles events. Colony’s Fischer Summers won the discus and Wasilla’s William Harren finished first in the shot put. Wasilla’s Mitchell Rilatos won the 110 hurdles, and Colony’s Ken McCoy was first in the 300 hurdles.
