Wasilla girls sweep; Houston boys win

The top Region III girls basketball team added to its impressive record, as Wasilla remained undefeated in region play with a pair of victories on the road.

The Warriors beat Homer 52-38 Monday and then hammered Skyview 72-24 Tuesday in games that are being made up because of past cancellations when the weather was bad.

Against Homer, Alina Minnick and Brittney Kroon both scored 14 points, and guard Renaye Lavin added 13 for the balanced Wasilla attack. The Warriors also used a strong defensive effort, limiting the Mariners to just 12 points in the first half.

The Panthers never had a shot, as the Warriors outscored Skyview 23-5 in the first period and 36-10 in the first half.

Kroon had a game-high 22 points, but she had plenty of help from her teammates. Lavin had 17, guard Tonya James added 15 and Minnick contributed 13 for the Warriors, who sit atop the region standings.

Their boys counterpart was not as lucky, as Homer upset the Wasilla boys team 55-51 Monday. The Warriors rallied to pull out a split by beating Skyview 49-39 Tuesday.

Against Homer, Ben Luer hit for 15 points and Justin Buzby added 11, but it was not enough to counter Homer, which had four players score in double figures.

The Warriors rebounded by beating Skyview behind Nick Buzby and Morgan Leeds. Nick Buzby had a game-high 18 points, and Leeds added 15 in the win.
