Wasilla girls win battle of defending champs

WASILLA — In a battle of defending state champions, the Wasilla Warriors came out on top.

Wasilla, the defending 4A state champ, scored a 55-33 win over defending 3A state champion Anchorage Christian School during the semifinal round of the Dimond Lady Lynx Classic Friday evening at Dimond High School.

Wasilla forced 26 turnovers and held ACS to 15 of 52 shooting to hand the Lions their first loss of the season. ACS led 11-7 in the first quarter, but was held to only 22 total points over the next three quarters.

Junior Cheyenne Green notched a double-double to lead the Warriors. Green scored a game-high 16 and pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds. Junior Olivia Davies added 15 points and seven assists in the victory.

Wasilla used an 18-5 second-quarter run to take a 25-16 halftime lead.

Wasilla played host Dimond late Saturday. Results were not available prior to Frontiersman press time.

Dimond, the 2017 4A runner-up, moved into the finals with an 80-51 victory over Colony in the other semifinal.

Alissa Pili finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Lynx. Jahna Hajdukovich added 21 points.

In other tournament action Friday, West Anchorage beat Palmer 54-25.

Wasilla boys beat Eagles

The Wasilla Warriors scored a big nonconference win, defeating West Anchorage 54-40 Friday night at Wasilla High.

The Warriors held West to only nine points in both the first and fourth quarters. Aeron Milliron and Daniel Headdings scored 11 points each for Wasilla. Jordan Knight added 10, and was 5 of 6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Senior leads Moose to win

Palmer senior Clayton Southwick scored 23 points and led the Moose to a 45-33 nonconference win Thursday night in Anchorage

Southwick, who was held to only four points in the first half, erupted for 17 in the third. Isaac Atkins and Jared Hawkins added five each.

Colony boys fall in Barrow

Host Barrow scored a 60-46 nonconference win over Colony Friday night at Barrow High School.

The Whalers jumped out to a 32-21 halftime lead, and added 22 points in the third quarter. Patrick McMahon led Colony with 10 points in the loss. Will Freeman and Colton Spencer added nine each.

Travis Adams paced Barrow with 13.

Hawks sweep Hawks

The Hutchison Hawks scored a pair of wins over the Houston Hawks Friday night at Houston High.

The Hutchison boys earned a 74-62. The Hutch girls beat Houston 40-26.
