WASILLA — A night after knocking of defending 3A state champion Barrow, Wasilla slipped past East Anchorage and into the championship game of the Doc Larson Roundball Classic at Wasilla High School.
Wasilla, the defending 4A state champs, edged the T-Birds 42-38 to improve to 2-0 in the tourney. The Warriors will meet Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth, California, which posted back-to-back lopsided wins over East and Barrow during the tourney.
After shooting about 50 percent from the field during its victory over the Whalers on Wednesday, Wasilla was held to just 23.5 percent shooting against East.
After trailing at halftime, the Warrior defense came through in the third quarter, holding the T-Birds to 1 of 9 shooting during that eight-minute span.
McKenna Dinkel led Wasilla with 11 points in the win. Olivia Davies chipped in eight, while Willow Drorbaugh and Kaylyn Kelly added a half-dozen each.
The Warriors play Sierra Canyon Friday at 6 p.m.
In boys’ action, Bartlett held on to beat host Wasilla 55-50. Kobe Brown scored 17 points for Wasilla. Daniel Headdings added 10.
Wasilla will play Service Friday at 4:30 p.m. Bartlett faces Barrow in the tournament championship game at 7:30 p.m.
