Wasilla High School Principal Jason Marvel has been named Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals Region VIII Principal of the Year.
Marvel has served as an educator in the Mat-Su Borough School District for the past 23 years. He has been a teacher and a basketball coach at Wasilla High and Palmer High, and a principal at Burchell and Wasilla.
"During the last four years Mr. Marvel has worked to move WHS from a school with good sports teams, but low academic achievement to one producing academic achievement at remarkable levels," Dr. Randy Trani, Superintendent of the Mat-Su School District, said in a press release issued by the AASSP giving high praises to Marvel's achievements at Wasilla High School.
Trani said that students at the school participating in advanced courses have increased ten fold over the last four years and graduation rates are at a historic high of 93%.
"Mr. Marvel's leadership is exemplar for the Mat-Su School District," Trani said.
AASSP sponsors regional and statewide Principal of The Year recognition awards to honor the educational leaders who play such a pivotal role in student success. They may be nominated by anyone – students, staff, parents, district office staff or principal peers - with awards finalized by AASSP members in their region. Regional Principals of The Year are eligible to be in the running for the statewide Alaska Principal of The Year.
