WASILLA — A group of local homeowners helped provide a new park for children in Wasilla in an area that was made previously unusable. On Saturday, Lakeview Estates Homeowners Association members, Wasilla Mayor Glenda Ledford, families and children gathered to celebrate the future site of a new park.
“This project truly showcases the spirit of Wasilla: neighbors coming together to make our community a better place to live, work and play,” said Ledford.
In a 3,000 square foot plot of land that had become overgrown with weeds after it was left vacant as a result of the Wasilla Rail Depot move, the local homeowner’s association got involved with the city to fund the park independently. Former Councilman Stu Graham and Lakeview Estates Homeowners Association President Bill Starns teamed up to secure the easement for city land on which to build the new park.
“We still have work to do to finish the park, but the hard part is done and everyone’s efforts and collaboration will make the work ahead just as easy and meaningful as what we have accomplished so far,” said Graham. “The neighbors decided to move a fence on their property and combine their land with the city’s land to create an attractive space for neighborhood residents to enjoy. Although the city still owns the original 3,000 square foot piece of land, this neighborhood homeowner’s association secured an easement to utilize and maintain the land for community beautification and enjoyment.”
