Wasilla junior wins 4 events; Colony senior breaks school record

HOUSTON — As Houston High School hosted the Region III Preview Meet last week, Wasilla junior Oliva Davies and Colony senior Jarek Schultz gave opponents a sneak peak of what they’re up against.

Davies won all four of her events and Schultz shattered a school record in the discus.

Davies, in her first season with the Wasilla High track and field team, finished first in the 100 meters, 200, long jump and triple jump. Her time in the 200, 25.96 seconds, was a personal record and would have won her a state title at the 2017 state championships. Davies finished with a time of 12.58 in the 100, a day after recording a personal best mark of 12.54 in the preliminaries. Davies, a basketball star at WHS, hit marks of 16 feet, 4 inches in the long jump and 34-9.5 in the triple jump en route to wins.

Davies currently has the top times in Alaska in the 100 and 200 this season. She’s also second in the state in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump.

Schultz set a Colony school record with his winning throw in the boys’ discus. Schultz, who will play Division I football at Northern Arizona next fall, hit a mark of 157-7, more than two feet better than Colony’s prior school best. It marked his fourth straight win in the event this season.

Schultz also helped Colony finish first in the boys team standings with 118 total points. Schultz also scored one of Colony’s three wins in the field events. Braydon Reeves and Patrick McMahon also used personal bests to win their events. Reeves his 40-5.5 in the triple jump and McMahon reached 6-0 in the high jump.

The Palmer boys finished as the runner-up in the boys’ standings with 94 total points. Lev Robertson led the Moose with a win in the 800 meters. Palmer also finished first in the 800 and 1,600 relay races.

Colony was the top Valley team in the girls standings, finishing third with 79 total points. Presley Petersen led Colony with the win in the high jump, a mark of 5-2.

Wasilla finished fifth in the girls’ standings. Allison VanPelt added a pair of Wasilla victories. The junior was first in the 800 and 3,200. VanPelt posted a personal best in the 800 with a time of 2:25.60.

The meet was scheduled as a preview of the Region III Championships, which will be hosted by Houston May 18-19.
