Wasilla junior wins state title

FAIRBANKS — It took only one throw for John Knowles to erase a rough start in the state shot put competition.

Knowles launched the shot 49 feet and 5 1/4 inches to win an individual title during the first day of the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Track and Field Championships at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks on Friday.

“I was really nervous. The first two throws, the first was a scratch and the second was a 41,” Knowles said by cell phone Friday afternoon. “I didn’t think I was going to make it (to the finals), then I threw a 47 and finally got back.”

Knowles, who edged Bartlett senior Raymond Reid by about six inches, was one of two Warriors to place in the top four. Wasilla senior Chris Lafe placed fourth with a throw of 46-2 1/2.

Both Wasilla weightmen were aiming for the 50 mark, and Lafe admitted he was a bit disappointed by his throw.

“But I put everything into it,” he said. “I tried.”

Lafe said the throw felt like it went farther than 46 feet. He actually had a longer throw during the final round, but scratched.

When Knowles unleashed his throw of 49 feet, the junior said he felt like it was a good attempt.

On Saturday, Knowles went for the sweep of the throwing events, but felt short, finishing second in the discus.

He entered the event with the state’s best throw, a 165-foot toss he recorded at the Northern Lights Conference Championships in Soldotna last week. But on Saturday, Knowles topped out at 145-9, nearly three feet short of Dimond’s Mitchell Swensen, who won the event with a throw of 148-1.

Palmer senior J.D. Mitchell was sixth in the discus at 127-7.

Houston junior Danielle Barney also had a high finish in the throws, placing second in the 4A girls discus. Barney hit 104-02. Colony’s Gaynor Johansen was third with a throw of 102-4 and the Knights’ Shellina Irwin placed sixth in the event, hitting 95-1.

Irwin was also fifth in the shot put. Palmer’s Erin LaMere finished fourth in the event.

Colony junior Matt Jaronik placed in four events for the Knights.

The 2008 state champion in the 400 finished second in the event with a time of 50.25 seconds. Bartlett’s Raymond Reid edged Jaronik with a time of 50.18.

Jaronik was also fifth in the long jump, and sixth in the 200 and triple jump.

Palmer’s 400-meter relay team and Houston’s 800 relay squad finished fourth and sixth respectively.

Wasilla led Valley boys squads in the teams standings with an eighth-place finish. Colony was 12th, Palmer was 15th and Houston was 18th.

Freshman Morgan Dampier led the Wasilla girls with a third-place finish in the 200. Wasilla relay squads finished third in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Senior Rachel Hoffman finished fifth in the 300 hurdles for WHS.

A pair of Knights finished in the top-four of the girls’ triple jump. Junior Siobhan Johansen was third with a leap of 32-2 1/4 finishing just ahead of freshman teammate Taylor Stewart, who won the Northern Lights Conference crown in the event last week.

Alyssa Hutchins was fifth in the 800 and Laura Maresh was sixth in the long jump.

Colony led Valley teams with a 12th-place finish in the girls team standings. Wasilla followed in 13th, Houston placed 17th and Palmer was 19th.
