WASILLA — A 25-year-old Wasilla resident, Victor Jack, was arrested by Alaska State Troopers Tuesday, March 19 for third-degree assault on an arrest warrant.

According to AST online dispatch records, Troopers responded to a call about a fight between two males in progress at 1:13 a.m. Feb. 28. When Troopers arrived at the scene of a residence located on Stacy Street in Wasilla, they located one of the males involved in the altercation and detained him in a patrol vehicle.

While the Troopers were interviewing the detained suspect, the second male involved in the fight walked out of a residence wielding a knife. Troopers issued several commands for the armed suspect to drop the knife but he continued approaching them while brandishing the knife.

According to dispatch records, Trooper Toma Caldarea shot the approaching male due to his actions. The male was sustained “serious injuries” from the gunshot and transported to a local hospital for treatment, and no one else was injured.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time against anyone involved in the incident. Charges are expected to be filed as the investigation continues.

Trooper Caldarea, a 20-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers, was put on a mandatory 72 hours of administrative leave in accordance with Department of Public Safety policy.

According to the dispatch records, the Alaska Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident and the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions will review the case afterwards.
