A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Wasilla Friday afternoon.
Investigators with the Alaska State Trooper Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU) arrived at a residence in Wasilla to arrest Jimmie Janeway, age 63 of Wasilla, on probable cause for second-degree sexual abuse of a minor and second-degree sexual assault, according to an online dispatch. When investigators knocked on the door, troopers said Janeway answered the door with a gun to his head and stated he would not go to jail. He refused to drop the gun and Investigators attempted negotiations without success.
At about 2:50 p.m., troopers and members of the Wasilla Police Department attempted to take Janeway into custody using a taser and less-lethal force. The less-lethal tools had limited effect and Janeway pointed the gun in the direction of law enforcement on scene, troopers said.
At that time, on scene law enforcement discharged their firearms striking Janeway. Medics were already on scene however lifesaving attempts were unsuccessful and Janeway succumbed to his injuries.
The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is currently conducting the investigation. Next of kin have been notified. The names of the law enforcement that discharged their firearms will be released after 72 hours per department policy. The investigation is ongoing.
