Wasilla man drowns in Matanuska Lake

PALMER — A Wasilla man drown Saturday evening while swimming in Matanuska Lake.

Alaska State Troopers say they responded to a report of CPR in progress around 6 p.m., July 13. They say their investigation determined that James Evangelestomp, 23, was swimming in the lake when he went under and did not resurface.

CPR was in progress, troopers say, when Mat-Su Borough EMS arrived and transported Evangelestomp to the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Next of kin was on scene, and no foul play is suspected, troopers said.

Evangelestomp was a 2009 Wasilla High School graduate.
