VALDEZ — Scott Hebig of Wasilla spent the weekend fishing in Valdez June 20, made a little money doing it, and took over the top spot in this year’s Valdez Halibut Derby.
Hebig was aboard the Amanda Rose when he hauled in a 203.6-pound halibut that won him $1,000 cash in the 10-day Valdez Halibut Hullabaloo tournament. The flat fish also won the first place weekly prize and was the first halibut of the 2014 season that weighed more than 200 pounds.
The person who lands the larges halibut before the end of the derby Aug. 31 wins $15,000 in cash.
Other Valdez fishing derbies include the Kids Pink Salmon Derby is July 19; the Silver Salmon Derby starts July 19; and the Women’s Derby is Aug. 8-9.
