Less than a month after receiving a 30-year federal sentence for his role in the 2024 overdose death of 16-year-old Alena Toennis, Sean Mobley received a 20-year sentence from the state last week,.
Mobley appeared in a Palmer courtroom on February 5 to receive his sentence, which will run concurrently with his federal conviction. The sentencing comes after he changed his plea to guilty to one count of first-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance in connection with Toennis’ death last year, thus eliminating the need for a trial. The original state charges of 2nd-degree murder and manslaughter were later dropped in accordance with the federal prosecution.
Toennis died in November, 2024, after an overdose on carfentanil-an opioid 100 times more potent than fentanyl-that was provided by Mobley. Her death was preceded by another overdose from the same drug distributed by Mobley, although that victim was successfully revived with Narcan.
According to court documents, Mobley had been contacted about the previous overdose, but still distributed to Toennis, who used the substance while in a car with Mobley. While she was unresponsive, he later took her to an ATV trail where she was later found deceased.
The state sentence brings a conclusion to the state’s legal proceedings against Mobley.
