WASILLA — Wasilla Mayor Glenda Ledford issued three mayoral proclamations during the regularly scheduled Wasilla City Council meeting Monday, April 25.

Ledford recognized May as Older Americans Month, a nationally celebrated campaign. She said the City of Wasilla recognizes the importance of the physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being of its citizens and the need to create a community that provides support for older residents to help them thrive and live independently as long as possible. She said there’s a growing number of older residents across Wasilla that makes countless contributions to the community.

“The City of Wasilla is stronger when all ages, abilities, and backgrounds are encouraged to make their mark,” Ledford said.

The second proclamation recognized the 53rd Annual Professional Municipal Clerks Week. Ledford said the Municipal Clerk position is an important and time-honored role among public servants, providing the professional link between the citizens, local governing bodies, and agencies of government at other levels. She said they serve as the information center for local government and community information.

“Professional municipal clerks have pledged to be ever mindful of their neutrality and impartiality rendering equal service to all,” Ledford said.

The final proclamation recognized National Small Business Week, which has been celebrated since 1963 to highlight the programs and services available to entrepreneurs through the U.S. Small Business Administration and other agencies.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the economy and the cornerstone of our nation’s promise,” Ledford said.

Ledford said supporting local establishments continues a positive impact on the community by creating job opportunities and spurring economic growth. She said that small businesses across the country create an average of two out of three jobs in the current economy.

“The City of Wasilla joins in this national effort to help America’s small businesses do what they do best: grow their businesses, create jobs, and ensure our local communities remain as vibrant tomorrow as they are today,” Ledford said.
