WASILLA — Sumie Hirobe made school history last weekend.
Hirobe became the first Wasilla High athlete to win a match at the state tennis tournament. Hirobe opened with a (6-4, 7-6, 10-5) victory over Roslyn Stapp of North Pole during the first day of the ASAA/First National Bank State Tennis Championships last week in Anchorage.
Hirobe finished fifth in the girls’ singles bracket, after falling to South’s Kaja Ferkiova (8-1, 6-0) on the final day of the tourney.
Three Valley schools were represented in the championships. In addition to Hirobe, Palmer’s Johnie Burton played for the Moose in the boys’ singles. Colony’s Brennan Easley and Logan Crawford advanced to state in the boys’ doubles.
