Wasilla relay team sets unofficial record in meet

ANCHORAGE — If regular season marks counted in the records books, four Wasilla High runners would have penciled themselves in over the weekend.

Mariah Burroughs, Peggy Mathis, Jessica Pahkala and Morgan Dampier posted a time of 9 minutes and 30.97 seconds to win the 3,200-meter relay at the Big C Relays at The Dome. The group’s time is five seconds faster than the state record set by West Valley in 2004.

Alaska state track and field records can only be set at the state championship meet.

Although the Warriors didn’t make it into the record books with their feat, it was part of another terrific weekend for Wasilla girls track and field. The win was one of two relay victories for Wasilla. Mathis, Pahkala, Jenna Ford and Alysha Devine combined to win the 1,600-meter medley relay.

Dampier and Pahkala also posted individual wins. Dampier was first in the 400 and Pahkala won the 800.

Dampier also posted the state’s best time of the season in the 100 during the preliminary events Friday. Dampier ran a season-best 12.64 seconds and now holds the state best in the 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1,600.

Dampier also finished second in the Big C pentathlon. She fell four points shy of first-place Alisha Allen of Lathrop. Dampier amassed 3,613 points in the pentathlon, which includes the high jump, shot put, 100, 300 hurdles and 800.

Senior Rachael Huffman led the Palmer girls with a first-place finish in the shot put and a third-place finish in the discus. Huffman used a throw of 35 feet and 7.5 inches to beat runner-up Sarah Swanson of West Valley by nearly two feet.

Taylor Holen led Houston with a fifth-place finish in the pentathlon.

Wasilla senior Devon Teeling finished as the runner-up in both throwing events to lead Valley athletes in the boys’ class.
