ANCHORAGE — Morgan Dampier continues to find ways to surprise people on the track.
The Wasilla senior has already won three individual state titles, set a state record in the 800 meters, broke that same state record the following year and led her team to a state team title.
On Saturday, Dampier added another feat to her ever-growing list of accomplishments. Dampier won the 100, 200, 400 and 800-meter events during the Junior/Senior Championships at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.
Wasilla head coach Gary Howell said his senior standout simply wanted to try running in each of the four major events in one day.
“There were no relays and she wanted to test herself,” Howell said. “She wanted to see if she could do it.”
Dampier posted a time of 12.95 to win the 100 and edge former teammate Dajanae Harris, who now runs for Service. Dampier was three seconds faster than the runner-up in the 800 and finished more than seven seconds of ahead of the second-place runner in the 400.
In the 200, Dampier posted a personal-best time of 26.00.
“People are just in awe of what she can do,” Howell said. “She’s really head and shoulders above everybody. She’s put her stamp on this state, no doubt, being the most superior athlete (in girls track) we’ve seen in a long time.”
Dampier helped Wasilla finish with 73 total points to win the meet.
Junior Jenna Ford also won a pair of events, the 1,600 and 3,200.
Howell said Ford’s performance in the 1,600 was particularly impressive. Ford edged runner-up Jenette Northey of Service by two one-hundredths of a second.
“Jenna put down a kick in the mile. In the last 50 meters she got a little tenacious there. It was really exciting,” Howell said.
Senior Sariah Tuisaula won the shot put, using a throw of 33 feet, 9 inches to finish first. Her throw was about three feet longer than the runner up.
“Sariah’s throwing really well right now,” Howell said.
Seniors Noah Ripley and Devon Teeling won events for the Wasilla boys in the meet, which featured only 11th- and 12th-graders. Ripley was first in the 3,200 and Teeling posted the best throw in the shot put.
Wasilla also sent a team of underclassmen to the Frosh/Soph Championships at Dimond High in Anchorage. The Warriors girls finished third in the team standings with 61 points.
Freshman Peggy Mathis was first in the 400 and 1,600. Sophomore Mariah Burroughs won the 800 and 3,200.
