WASILLA — One of the Valley’s top senior wrestlers earned the opportunity to compete at the next level.

Wasilla High standout Alex Logsdon has signed his National Letter of Intent to wrestle at Averett University in Danville, Virginia, and compete for the Division III Cougars.

“Stepping on the wrestling mat is always like a second home to me. I love the sport to death and am blessed with every seconds I get on the mat. Cutting weight, the sweat, the tears, and the butterflies in your stomach you get right before the ref blows his whistle. Now that’s wrestling and that’s what I love for. It’s what I care about,” Logsdon said.

Logsdon capped his high school career as a four-time state placer and three-time state finalist. He was the runner up at 119 pounds three times. Logsdon was also a two-time Northern Lights Conference champion. He was named his team’s most outstanding wrestler and most inspirational wrestler.

“Alex always has a positive attitude and is very hard working. He was always at the 6 a.m. morning practices and willing to put in the extra time. He wrestled in the offseason with Arctic Warriors wrestling and Team Alaska. The extra time paid off,” Wasilla head coach Shawn Hayes said.

Logsdon will major in aviation with a concentration on flight operations, and his goal is to be a commercial pilot.

“Not only will Alex better himself in academics, but also in athletics here at Averett. Each day is about self-improvement and being better than you were the day before. In our third year as a program, we have three nationally ranked guys and the team has been ranked as high as (No.) 22 in the nation. With the addition of Alex, we look to climb to even higher heights. He is a difference maker for an emerging program,” Averett head coach Blake Roulo said.
