WASILLA — Thomas Rivera could not pass up the opportunity to rush the passer at the next level.
Late last week, the Wasilla High School senior officially committed to Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota, and will play defensive end for the NCCAA Lions.
“I’ve always loved defense,” Rivera said after making his official commitment. “Going for the attack.”
Rivera, a two-year varsity player for the Warriors, started on both sides of the football. He played at center and tackle on offense, and all across the defensive front for the Warriors.
“Wherever we needed him, he’s always available,” Wasilla head coach Will Stout said.
But the focus is now on defense.
“I just like to pass rush,” Rivera said. “I’m a big guy. I move pretty fast. I feel like defensive end is a good fit for me.”
Stout also said he believes the position is the right spot for Rivera at the next level.
“It’s exciting,” Stout said. “It fits the mold of what they’re looking for, what they’re trying to accomplish.”
In addition to the skill set, Stout said Rivera also has the intangibles to succeed.
“His work ethic is tremendous,” Stout said. “He was in the weight room every day last year. He’s still in the weight room getting ready for next year. He’s got a great work ethic, great attitude to other coaches, players.”
Rivera said choosing a faith-based school was important.
“I thought a bible college was the way to go for me,” Rivera said.
Stout also commended Rivera’s choice, which included factors beyond football.
“That’s great taking other things into account,” Stout said. “The most important thing is football is offering a chance to get his education.”
