Wasilla senior wins pair of events

ANCHORAGE — Wasilla senior Jeff Frey won a pair of events during the Bartlett/Chugiak Invitational swimming and diving meet at Bartlett High School on Saturday.

Frey finished first in both the 100-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke during the meet, that included 40 boys and girls teams from across the state.

Frey used a time of 48.64 seconds to win the 100 freestyle. He beat second-place Wyatt Adams, of Service, by two-tenths of a second. Juneau’s Nick Rutecki, who edged Frey to win a state title in the 100 freestyle last season, was third in the event.

Frey beat second-place Drew Vandermeer, of West Valley, by about two seconds to win the 100 backstroke. Vandermeer finished second in the 100 backstroke at the state championships last year.

Wasilla senior Christian Long finished third in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 5:09.79. Dimond’s Matt Summers was first, and Seward’s Ryan O’Leary finished in second, about three seconds ahead of Long.

Frey and Long helped the Warriors place sixth among 19 boys programs in the meet. Wasilla was the top Region III boys team in the invitational.

The Colony boys finished 15th and Palmer was 18th.

Wasilla also led Valley programs on the girls’ side, with a 10th-place finish in the team standings. Colony was 13th and Palmer finished 17th.
