Wasilla sophomore wins four events at The Dome

ANCHORAGE — The Wasilla Warriors thought they lost their track standout capable of winning four individual titles in any given meet.

But it appears the Warriors have found another.

Following in the path of past teammate and former WHS star Morgan Dampier, WHS sophomore Peggy Mathis put her stamp on the Alaska track world by winning four individual events during the Pro/Whit Indoor Championships at The Dome in Anchorage on Saturday.

Mathis, who helped the two-time defending state champion Wasilla Warriors finish first in the girls’ team standings, won the 100, 200, 400 and 800-meter events during the meet.

A highlight came in the 200, where Mathis used a time of 26.04 seconds, a time that currently ranks as the state’s best. The time is also a personal best for Mathis.

Mathis ran a 12.92 to win the 100, posted a 1:01.22 in the 400 and finished first in the 800 with a mark 2:32. Her time in the 100 was also a career personal best.

Mathis helped Wasilla amass 71 points in the team standings and finish five ahead of second-place Eagle River.

Mariah Burroughs, Alysha Devine and Jenna Ford also posted top-5 finishes for the Warriors. Burroughs was second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600, while Ford was third in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600.

Devine placed third in the 300-meter hurdles.

Mitchell Rilatos led the Wasilla boys with a sixth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles.
