WASILLA — During his time with the Wasilla High School football program, Aeron Milliron did just about everything for the Warriors, playing just about everywhere.
Quarterback. Tight end. Running back. Linebacker. Safety.
But the three-year varsity standout used all of that experience to earn the opportunity to play at the next level. Last week, surrounded by friends and family, the Wasilla senior officially committed to the University of Montana-Western, where he will play tight end for the NAIA Bulldogs. Milliron said he’s excited to be able to focus on a single position.
“That’s where I wanted to play,” Milliron said.
Wasilla head coach Will Stout said tight end is the ideal spot for Milliron at the college level.
“He’s got the body type. He’s a big, strong, athletic kid,” Stout said of the 6-foot-3, 245-pound senior.
Stout said the versatility, thanks to playing so many different positions in high school, should also give Milliron an edge.
“He’s a very versatile player. He’s a tremendous blocker, and he’s got the size and strength to go up and fight for the ball,” Stout said.
Milliron is also a standout on the basketball court. Stout said the skill set he has on the hardwood will also help him on the gridiron at the next level.
“All of those skills will translate to (the tight end) position,” Stout said.
Bulldogs head coach Ryan Nourse noted Milliron’s versatility in a press release issued by the school’s athletic department, announcing the program’s 23 commitments.
“His versatility speaks to his athleticism. We believe Aeron will be able to play tight end at a high level in the Frontier Conference,” Nourse said.
Stout said Milliron also does whatever it takes to help his team.
“He’s a special athlete, but it’s his willingness to do whatever needs to be done for the team, what’s best for the team,” Stout said. “He wants to do what’s best for the team.”
Milliron said Eastern Washington University and Robert Morris University in Illinois were also among the schools he considered. But ultimately, Montana-Western came to the table with a great offer and he sees the Dillon, Montana, school as the right fit for him.
“It’s a small town like Wasilla. I’m just more comfortable,” Milliron said.
Milliron was named first-team All-Railbelt Conference and second-team all-state at quarterback as a senior. He led the Warriors with 671 yards rushing and three touchdowns as a senior, and also threw for 501 yards and nine touchdown passes. As a junior, running the football in Wasilla’s double-wing offense, Milliron led the Warriors with 592 yards rushing and eight scores. He finished with 201 yards on the ground as a sophomore.
Milliron was also named first-team all-conference and second-team all-state at running back as a junior.
