ANCHORAGE — A trio of Wasilla wrestlers upset top seeds during the final round to lead the Warriors to the team title at the Glenn Vandergaw Classic at Dimond High School in Anchorage on Saturday.
Wasilla senior Casey Katchinska knocked off defending state champion Nolan McBryde, of Chugiak, 2-1 in the 171-pound final.
Katchinska was one of three Wasilla wrestlers to win during the final four matches of the tourney.
Senior Chris Crane edged South Anchorage’s Brent Reed 10-7 at 189 pounds.
Jed Johnson also used a 2-1 score to beat another top seed, Bartlett’s Terrell Burke, in the 285-pound final.
Abe Fox (103) and Nick Perkins (130) also advanced to the finals for the Warriors, who won the team title with 204 total points.
Palmer, led by senior Nick Stahler’s title at 140, finished 10th in the standings with 68 points.

Warriors, Moose post victories in duals
ANCHORAGE — The Wasilla Warriors and Palmer Moose were both victorious in duals during the first day of the Glenn Vandergaw Classic at Dimond High School in Anchorage on Friday.
Wasilla earned a 51-20 win over East Anchorage and a 33-29 victory over Chugiak during the duals. Palmer beat Dimond 46-34.
Pat Chafin, Wasilla’s starter at 140 pounds, was one of seven Warriors to record pins against East Anchorage.
Late wins by Randy Pomrenke and Jed Johnson helped the Warriors edge Chugiak in their other dual. Pomrenke posted a second-period pin in the 215-pound weight class, and Johnson won by forfeit at heavyweight.
Despite forfeiting five matches against the Lynx, Palmer scored the 12-point win over Dimond.
L.J. Leppanen sparked the Moose by pinning his opponent in just 48 seconds in the 130-pound match.
Results of the Glenn Vandergaw tournament on Saturday were not available prior to the Frontiersman press time.

Isaac Wilson (112), Charles Coisman (119), Sam Loggins (130), Ryan Knutson (152), Kenny Boykin (160) and Eric Fan (215) recorded pins for the Knights.
Among the winners for Wasilla was senior Casey Katchinska, who edged Colony senior Angelo Bellotte 6-5 at 189 pounds.
