Wasilla wrestlers win West Christmas Classic

ANCHORAGE — The West Anchorage Eagles gave state power Wasilla a battle for the team title, but guaranteed points late in the final round proved to be the difference for the Warriors.

Wasilla’s Quace Wright’s forfeit victory over teammate Zech Rockstad in the 220-pound class of the championship final was enough to give the Warriors the team title during the West Anchorage Christmas Classic in Anchorage on Saturday.

Wasilla, last year’s state runner-up, and West traded leads during the final round, and the Eagles led 251-249 after West’s Leroy Elliot beat Wasilla’s Billy Schultz in the 195-pound final. But with a pair of Wasilla grapplers in the 220-pound final, West’s two-point lead didn’t last.

The Wright win gave the Warriors a final total of 255 points. Host West finished second at 251.

Colony placed third in the team standings with 222 points.

The Warriors moved seven wrestlers into the final round, and boasted two wrestlers in the finals at two different weight classes. Brandon Abbott and Bret Sturgeon both advanced to the finals at 106 for the Warriors. Abbott won the match with a first-round pin.

Chance Boatman also earned an individual title for the Warriors, beating Palmer’s Graydon Powell in the finals. Isaac Lynch also finished second for the Warriors at 120.

Five Knights wrestled in the finals, and three were crowned champions. Chace Booth (113), Dawson Nash (138) and Spencer Adams (145) all won their respective weight classes. Tyler Loutzenhiser (145) and Riley Fredrickson (182) both finished second.
