Water worries wane

PALMER — Though emergency crews are continuing to keep a wary eye on it, the Matanuska River seems to be settling down.

“It appears that the water is actually receding. The river is calming down a little bit,” said Deputy Director of Emergency Services for the Mat-Su Borough Clint Vardeman.

Rising waters flooded a yard and necessitated the construction of a sandbag barrier Monday. The home was evacuated.

“Water never got to either of those structures,” Vardeman said.

So, happy ending, right?

“Ending — we hope. We’ll keep our fingers crossed. But, happy? “Yes,” Vardeman said.
